NTSB investigation into fatal Atlanta plane crash begins

The search for answers begins in a Spaulding County hangar.
Workers begin to bring in pieces of an aircraft destroyed in a fatal Atlanta crash on May, 8.

GRIFFIN, Ga. -- National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigations are set to begin to find out exactly why a plane crashed on Friday morning in Atlanta killing all aboard.

11Alive was live in Griffin, Ga. as pieces of the wreckage were being transported into a hangar at Atlanta Air Recovery where the search for answers will begin.

This comes after Friday's accident where officials documented the scene and collected debris from Interstate 285.

Officials told 11Alive that they will now begin to look into the experience of the pilot and the maintenance history of the Piper PA-32 he was flying.

The goal is to figure out what caused the aircraft to come down killing a father, two of his sons as well as one of their fiancés and a family pet on their way to a family member's graduation.

Witnesses who saw that plane come down said that they couldn't believe it and never expected to see anything like that happen.

"As I turned to get onto 285, there was just a large plume of black smoke; fire everywhere," one witness said. "I immediately stopped to see what was going on to see if I could help somebody but it was gone by then – and it was done."

Now, the NTSB says that it will work to reconstruct that plane that they began bringing into the facility Saturday morning so that investigators can begin some of those processes.

Officials said that could take about two weeks.

A final report, however, could take around six months.

11Alive will continue to follow this story in the months to come as investigators reveal answers in this tragic accident.
