Man shot and killed by SWAT team member during drug operation in Smyrna, GBI says

It happened early Thursday morning.

SMYRNA, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Thursday a man was shot and killed by a SWAT team member during a drug operation in Smyrna.

A GBI outline of events did not make clear if the man was a suspect in the operation.

The incident happened early in the morning, a little before 5 a.m., according to a GBI release issued later in the afternoon. It happened at an apartment complex on Springbrook Trail.

The bureau said that the incident occurred while law enforcement officers from the Marietta Cobb Smyrna Organized Crime Task Force and Cobb County Sheriff's Office SWAT team were executing search warrants.

"During entry into the residence, a SWAT team member discharged his firearm and an occupant of the apartment was struck," a GBI release said. "The subject was transported to Wellstar Cobb Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The identification of the subject is pending next of kin notification."

It was not clear if the SWAT team member who shot and killed the man had been fired upon or otherwise threatened first. The GBI did not note that any arrests were made during the operation.

The GBI said no officers were injured in the incident and that an autopsy will be performed by the Cobb County Medical Examiner's Office.
