A 41-year-old man was seriously hurt after being shot by police on Saturday in Clarkesville, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

An officer with the Clarkesville Police Department was called out around 6:17 p.m. to Cameron Circle near the Cameron Apartments to check on someone who was reportedly suicidal. The officer said they could not find the man and had called for assistance from the Demorest Police Department.

That Demorest officer arrived and reported seeing a man with a handgun runoff. That's when deputies from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office joined the search and eventually found the man armed with a rifle.

According to officials, the man turned toward officers with the rifle, leading several officers to open fire.

After being shot multiple times, officers provided medical treatment at the scene. The man was taken to a hospital by helicopter, where he remains in critical condition.

No other information about the shooting was provided, and GBI said it is completing its investigation; once done, the case will be handed over to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
