ATLANTA — One person is dead, and another is injured after a car crashed into a tree in Atlanta on Sunday morning, police said.

According to the Atlanta Police Department, officers responded to the I-75 Northbound Expressway NW and Moores Mill Road NW in reference to an auto accident with entrapment shortly after 6:30 a.m.

When they arrived, officers found a 24-year-old male driver and a 33-year-old female passenger in a Toyota Corolla. Police said that the driver was not conscious, and once he was removed from the car, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was conscious and sent to the hospital for treatment.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the Toyota was heading north on the I-75 Expressway when the driver exited onto the Moores Mill Road exit at a high rate of speed, which caused him to lose control of the car, police said. The vehicle then left the roadway and hit a tree before stopping in a grass area outside the roadway.

Officers with the Accident Investigations Unit responded to the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. This is an ongoing investigation, police said.
