Police said he ran down the hill to see that an SUV had rolled south onto Mathis Road and was beginning to smoke. That's when he and two other bystanders jumped in to help rescue a woman and her child who were trapped.
After the two were freed, the car became fully engulfed in flames. Rome-Floyd Fire Department soon arrived to extinguish the fire.
The mother was taken to Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center in Rome. Police said she is recovering following knee surgery and medical officials cleared the child.
