Paulding County food pantry needs $1.5 million to continue serving community

Helping Hands of Paulding County is requesting support in securing a new property.

PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. — Helping Hands of Paulding County needs to raise over $1.5 million dollars in the next two months to continue serving their community.

The organization has a food pantry to provide nourishment for those facing food insecurity and is also committed to helping those in need by providing clothing and essential items.

However, the executive director of the nonprofit, Reva Burks, said they've outgrown their current space on Spring Street in Dallas, and city leaders have told them they need to find a new building.

"We’re going to have to move out of the building because the city wants to use this space for development," Burks explained.

Helping Hands has 147 Victory Drive under contract and is scheduled to close on the property on April 2. But they still need to come up with $1.5 million dollars to secure it.

“If we did not get the money, we would not get the building," Burks said.

She also stated people who use the pantry have given what they can towards the effort, "my first person gave $3 in change, and we tell everybody there’s no amount too small that they can give.”

Leaders are asking for community partners and residents to help support their efforts in securing the new property. You can find out more information on how to give here.

According to its website, the organization was founded in 1987 by five local churches: First Baptist Church of Dallas, Dallas First UMC, New Canaan Baptist, New Hope Baptist and Poplar Springs Baptist. These churches then initiated a partnership to battle the effects of poverty and hunger. Since then, it has grown into a multi-faceted agency assisting others with their basic needs. It is now a coalition of churches, businesses, civic groups and individuals.
