Pedestrian dies days after being struck in hit-and-run crash in Canton, police say

The crash happened Monday afternoon in the 1100 block of Reinhardt College Parkway.

CANTON, Ga. — A pedestrian has now died after being struck by an alleged distracted driver in Canton on Monday afternoon.

The Canton Police Department announced Friday that 58-year-old Jeffery Buchanan had succumbed to his injuries after being hospitalized since the crash.

On July 23, around 1:51 p.m., officers responded to the 1100 block of Reinhardt College Parkway and found Buchanan lying in the roadway, unconscious, in the eastbound lanes.

Police immediately rendered aid to the man until EMS arrived, and he was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries, where he later died.

Investigators were able to quickly locate the vehicle and suspect, 23-year-old McKinley Hunter, at his Canton home. Hunter was arrested and initially charged with distracted driving and hit-and-run, resulting in serious injury. He now faces additional charges, including first-degree homicide by vehicle, DUI, and open container.

The Canton Police Department says the crash is still under investigation and asks anyone with information to contact the department at 770-720-4883 or email Cpl. Matthew Naliwajka here.
