ATLANTA — Firefighters responding to a blaze at a homeless camp just off Interstate 85 in Atlanta found a person dead when they got on scene Tuesday night.
DeKalb Police officers responded to a multiple-vehicle accident on I-85 northbound at the Northcrest Road bridge around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday. When officers got there, they said the crash was caused by drivers looking off at a fire that had started underneath the bridge from the homeless camp.
That's when firefighters responded and found a body in the area, according to DeKalb County Fire Captain Jason Daniels. However, it is unclear at this time if the person died from the fire. 11Alive is still working to learn more details.
Daniels said the structural integrity of the bridge is now in question following the fire.
Multiple lanes were closed on I-85 for the investigation. Police did say that there were no major injuries from the multi-car pile-up. I-85 has since reopened following the crash.
