SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — As Sandy Springs Police attempted to serve an arrest warrant for a wanted person Tuesday afternoon, the department said shots were fired by officers and the suspect was hit in the body armor he was wearing.
Authorities said it happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. Sandy Springs Police previously said officers were responding in the area of 7600 Roswell Road and for people to avoid the area. In an update, they released more information saying a shooting happened at an apartment along Santa Fe Parkway, which is about a minute away.
Sandy Springs Police said officers attempted to contact the suspect. However, the police department said he confronted officers with a gun. That's when officers fired shots at him and he was struck in his body armor, the police department said.
No officers were hurt in the incident and the suspect was taken to the hospital for medical treatment, Sandy Springs Police added.
11Alive SkyTracker flew over the apartments, where crime scene tape was seen wrapped around one of the apartment buildings and blocking entry to a portion of the parking lot.
Sandy Springs Police said the investigation has been turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. 11Alive has reached out to the GBI for more information.
