Police departments honor their fallen on Peace Officer Memorial Day

Police officers around the country are honoring their colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty. This week is National Police Week and honors police officers across the country.

President Trump signed a proclamation making May 15 Peace Officers Memorial Day and encouraged government leaders and private citizens to fly flags at half-staff

Local police departments held memorials and shared their sentiments on social media. Here are a few.

Monday morning President Donald Trump is payed tribute to the "brave souls" who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. Trump spoke outside the U.S. Capitol Monday at the 36th Annual National Peace Officers' Memorial Service.

He said "attacks on our police are a stain on the fabric of our society." He added that it's "time to work with our cops, not against them."

Trump said it is his duty as president to keep America safe "from crimes, safe from terrorism and safe from all enemies - foreign and domestic."

He said that at the center of that duty is the "requirement to ensure law enforcement personnel are given tools and resources they need to do their jobs and come home to their families safely."
