Early morning power outages clear up around metro Atlanta, with some lingering

A large outage earlier affected Georgia EMC customers.

ATLANTA — UPDATE: An early-morning power outage affecting thousands of Georgia EMC customers around metro Atlanta has largely cleared, with the number of customers affected down to about 800 from more than 8,600.

One large Georgia Power outage affecting more than 700 customers in the Lawrenceville area also continues to linger.

Thousands of Georgia EMC customers are without power early Monday morning, according to the service's outage map.

The Georgia EMC outage map showed as of 5:30 a.m. more than 8,600 customers without power in the metro Atlanta region (update: As of 6:15 a.m., the number was down to around 7,500; update 2: As of 6:30 a.m., the number is now down a little over 6,000). The cause for the outages is not clear. 

It's also unclear where the outages are centralized, as Georgia EMC's map does not show precise locations for outages. Click here to see the outage map.

Additionally, Georgia Power on Monday was reporting one substantial outage in Gwinnett County, with more than 700 customers affected in a zone spanning a small slice of southwest Lawrenceville's city limits north of Sugarloaf Parkway and then a larger slice south of the city limits to the north of Five Forks Trickum Road.

"An outage has been reported in your area. We are working to determine a restoration time," Georgia Power's website said of that zone.

The outages come ahead of a significant storm system expected to impact the region Monday night into Tuesday.
