ATLANTA — Editor's note: The video above is from a previous story related to Takeoff's death.
Migos rapper Quavo is taking action against gun violence by pouring resources into the metro Atlanta community.
He's been on a mission to help reduce crime in communities following the death of his group member Takeoff, who was also his nephew. The 28-year-old was gunned down at a downtown Houston bowling alley in 2022.
The unexpected death of Takeoff, whose real name is Kirsnick Khari Tiquon Ball, made national headlines. And following the tragedy, Quavo launched The Rocket Foundation. It was founded in 2022 to honor the later rapper's legacy. The foundation also works toward ending gun violence across the country.
His most recent effort will aid those close to home. Atlanta organizations helping to curb gun violence will have a chance to apply for a $10,000 "SPARK grant" through The Rocket Foundation.
Th initiative will award funds to 10 nonprofits that are "helping build an ecosystem of gun violence prevention and reduction in Atlanta," the website states.
The efforts to cater to the Atlanta community doesn't come as a surprise since the hip-hop trio started its music journey in the metro area in Gwinnett County years ago.
The applications are currently open and the deadline to apply is April 21.
"We’re dedicated to seeing our grantees succeed, which is why we partner with grantees to elevate their voices and maximize their reach, influence, and impact," according to The Rocket Foundation's website.
Other work Quavo has done to bring attention to gun violence included meeting privately with political figures last year, including Vice President Kamala Harris about the topic. He also spoke on a panel about the issue during the Congressional Black Caucus legislative conference.
