Rep. Tom Graves says son 'showing improved signs of responsiveness' after being hit in cycling event

The representative said that his son's strength is returning and he is showing improved signs of responsiveness.

ATLANTA — Rep. Tom Graves wrote on Twitter on Tuesday that his son is improving after being "critically injured" during a cycling event in Calhoun, Sunday.

Graves' son, John, is a member of Georgia Tech's cycling team.

Graves, who represents Georgia's 14th congressional district in the northwest corner of the state, said his son was injured in the Calhoun Downtown Criterium race and airlifted to a trauma unit.

In a Tuesday update, Graves wrote how his son suffered severe head trauma and had multiple spots of bleeding on his brain. Despite that, the representative added that his son's strength is returning and he is showing improved signs of responsiveness.

"We are thankful for these positive developments as John continues with his recovery. Thank you for all of the well wishes and prayers. They are so appreciated," he wrote.

"Thank you for the outpouring of support and prayers these last few days. Sunday," Graves added. "Thanks to his dedicated medical team, he's been responding extremely well to treatment and care."

Gov. Brian Kemp tweeted his support, saying he and his family were praying for John and the Graves family.

"May God grant John healing, and comfort his friends and loved ones during this time," the governor wrote.

According to Georgia Tech cycling team materials, the race was set to run up North Wall Street, cross Trammell Street, run down North and South Park Avenue, cross back over on West Hicks Street and go back up South Wall Street in downtown Calhoun.

Graves, who has served in the House since 2010, announced in December he would not be seeking re-election this year.
