ATLANTA — A new report raking walkable urban areas in the largest urban areas in the United States, Atlanta ranked 9th among the largest metropolitan areas in terms of percentage of walkable urban real estate for income properties.
"Atlanta shocked me," said Chris Leinberger, professor at the George Washington University's School of Business, and one of the co-authors of the new 2019 Foot Traffic Ahead report, which was released on Monday. "Who would have thought that Atlanta would be in the same category as Seattle?"
Leinberger worked in Atlanta in the 1980s, when its suburbs were booming and the central city was languishing. In the 1990s, Leinberger described the Atlanta region as "the fastest-growing human settlement in the history of the world," especially noting the region's sprawling development practices.
The Atlanta region has changed dramatically in the past 20 years, as noted by Leinberger's research, which noted the number of walkable, urban spaces, when compared to the number of drivable, suburban places in the top 30 metro areas of the country.
