Residents demand answers after Rockdale County chemical fire: 'The effect that it has had on the community is overwhelming'

Neighbors gathered at a local church for a packed town hall meeting to seek answers and discuss possible solutions.

CONYERS, Ga. — Frustration is growing among Rockdale County residents following a chemical fire at the BioLab plant, as officials and the company itself have provided limited information regarding the ongoing situation.

On Tuesday, neighbors gathered at a local church for a packed town hall meeting to seek answers and discuss possible solutions.

The meeting came just one day after Rockdale County Soil and Water Supervisor Kenny Johnson collapsed after he gave testimony about the chemical plume at a public meeting. Johnson's collapse has shaken the community, and the lack of clarity has only fueled residents' concerns.

"It's not just a matter of the fumes coming up," said a resident at the meeting. "But the effect that it has had on the community is overwhelming, and we really need to come together—not just in times of crisis."

Residents voiced concerns about the long-term health impacts and the overall safety of their businesses and homes. Many are frustrated by the inconsistent information they've received about the potential dangers posed by the chemicals released during the fire.

"I didn’t find out until today that we were supposed to call someone to move debris from our yard," said Quamica Keith, a local resident. "Me and my grandchildren moved the debris ourselves. Their late response is ridiculous. I feel like someone from BioLab should be here, talking to us."

There were no representatives from BioLab at Tuesday’s meeting, and only one Rockdale County official attended. Residents said they want direct communication from BioLab and clearer guidelines on how to protect themselves and their families.

In response to the growing concerns, BioLab has launched a 24-hour call center to assist residents and handle reimbursement requests, but many feel it’s not enough.

"We’re still waiting for answers," Keith added.
