CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. – Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill calls the shooting of a woman at a home in Lawrenceville on Sunday "a tragic and heartbreaking accident."
Gwinnett County Police say Hill called 911 and reported that he accidentally shot 43-year-old Gwenevere McCord at a model home on Britt Trail Drive Sunday night.
McCord is in critical condition at Gwinnett Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Authorities say Hill has been uncooperative with the investigation.
On Tuesday, Hill issued a statement saying:
As reported, on May 3, 2015, I was involved in a tragic and heartbreaking accident. Gwenevere McCord, who is very dear to me, was critically injured in this accident. Please understand that for the past 48 hours, I have been entirely focused on Gwenevere and her family. I will continue to pray unceasingly for her recovery. I ask you all to please pray for Gwenevere and her family throughout this most difficult time.
No charges have been filed and the case remains under investigation.
Clayton County Commission Chair Jeff Turner said on Tuesday that the sheriff hasn't been at work since the shooting, but is still in command.
"Sheriff Hill is still running the department," Turner said. "He is physically not there but you can run a department from your house or home or wherever he may be. Shawn Hill is the chief deputy and is making sure things are running smoothly."
