ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. -- A Rockdale County deputy was airlifted to the hospital after an accident during a pursuit on Wednesday.
Deputies were responding to a theft call on Ga. Highway 138 near Sigman road. Deputies attempted to block the suspect's vehicle in a parking lot. The suspect then struck a patrol vehicle and left the parking lot.
During the ensuing pursuit, a Rockdale County deputy left the road near Calloway Crossing and struck a fence. The deputy was injured and airlifted to the hospital. He was identified as Jerry Poreba, who has been on the force for two years.
The suspect's vehicle was located in a neighborhood on Calloway Crossing. Five suspects have been taken into custody.
