Rockdale County Schools extend virtual learning days following BioLab chemical incident

Students will continue virtual learning on Thursday, Oct. 10, Friday, Oct. 11, and the following week of Monday, Oct. 14 through Friday, Oct. 18.
The move comes after a fire led to a plume of chemicals being released into the air.

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — Following the ongoing cleanup at the Conyers BioLab facility, Rockdale County Schools students will move to virtual learning through Oct. 18.

The district's superintendent announced the update on Tuesday.

"This may seem like a small geographic area, but approximately half of our schools are located within this defined range, which requires that we take the necessary precautions," Superintendent Dr. Terry Oatts stated.

Students will continue virtual learning on Thursday, Oct. 10, Friday, Oct.11, and the following week, Monday, Oct. 14, through Friday, Oct. 18.

School staff will also continue to work remotely, according to the superintendent, who added buildings will remain closed and activities will be rescheduled.

"We still have not been given a definitive timeline for the completion of the cleanup, which is understandable as it is a fluid situation," Dr. Oatts explained. "We understand that this is not necessarily ideal for our students, staff, and families, but we must prioritize the health and wellbeing of our students and staff above all else."
