ROSWELL, Ga. — Two Roswell firefighters are now being recognized for their swift heroic actions after they jumped into the Chattahoochee River to save a drowning woman earlier this year

James Laudermilk and Andrew Riley will both now receive the 2023 Life Savior Valor Award.

On April 27, the firefighters were alerted after several bystanders said they saw the woman struggling to stay afloat near Don White Memorial Park. Firefighters and the Swiftwater Rescue Team then threw the victim a rope that she couldn't grab onto.

That's when Laudermilk and Riley jumped into 50-degree water and swam out to the woman bringing her safely to shore.

"I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Firefighters Laudermilk and Riley for receiving this recognition," said Roswell Mayor Kurt Wilson. "Their bravery, dedication, and unyielding commitment to public safety in the Roswell community embody the essence of the Roswell Fire Department. We appreciate all the brave men and women that protect our community each day."

The Georgia State Firefighters Association will be presenting the award to the brave firefighters.

"This bravery exemplifies the dedication and commitment our firefighters consistently display in the line of duty," said the fire department said.

Laudermilk joined the Roswell Fire Department in 2013, and Riley joined the department in 2015. They both currently serve at Fire Station 24. Fire officials said they dedicate themselves to community and have given back to the department.

"We value the dedication of the brave men and women that serve on the Roswell Fire Department," said Roswell Fire Chief Joe Pennino. "Recognitions like the Life Saving Valor Award not only spotlight individual acts of heroism but also underscore our team's commitment to public safety. The continued support from our elected officials, City leadership, and the Roswell community empowers us each day."

The two brave firefighters will be awarded at Roswell City Hall on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. at the city council meeting. They will also receive state recognition at the Georgia State Capitol in February.
