Roswell Fire adopts new 48-hour work schedule to improve firefighter wellness

The new schedule is designed to promote firefighter health and efficiency.

ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell Fire Department (RFD) is shifting to a new schedule designed to promote firefighter health and efficiency. Through a pilot program, firefighters will now work a 48/96-hour work cycle and will have a later start time.

The department made the move based on health risks associated with prolonged sleep deprivation, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and mental health disorders like PTSD and anxiety. The new schedule aims to improve rest time by offering firefighters more time to recover. The revised schedule also includes a later shift start time of 11 a.m.

Fire officials say the new schedule eliminates the need for early wake-ups on consecutive days, since firefighters will already be at their station, and enhances overall sleep quality.

"This is a significant step forward in our commitment to the health and well-being of our first responders. By adopting the 48/96 work schedule, we are enhancing our firefighters' quality of life and improving the safety and efficiency of our fire services," Roswell Mayor Kurt Wilson said in support of the initiative.

Now, firefighters will enjoy 26 four-day weekends a year, as opposed to 18 two-weekends, allowing for more continuous off-duty time and a decreased commute time.

"The health, safety, and quality of life of our firefighters are paramount. We anticipate that this new initiative will improve our team's mental and physical health outcomes, which are essential for maintaining high levels of service to our community," Fire Chief Joe Pennino stated.

The pilot program will last six months, and its impacts will be measured using data from medical physicals, operational efficiency, and job satisfaction among firefighters and their families.
