GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Greensboro man accused of planning to kill former president Donald Trump appeared in court Monday. A judge denied bail for Ryan Routh who will be held until trial.
The FBI also revealed new details about the case.
Federal prosecutors said they are seeking to charge Routh with attempted assassination of a political figure. Routh already faces two federal gun charges.
We learned from the FBI that Routh left behind a note saying he was going to kill the former president.
The letter was addressed "Dear World" and was left in a box at an undisclosed location months ago.
The letter read, "This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, but I failed you." It ended with a bounty on the former president.
WFMY talked with retired Greensboro police officer, Eric Rasecke who said he is responsible for a lot of the charges against Routh.
Routh was charged with petty crimes in the late 90s. Then the crimes intensified after starting to use drugs according to the retired officer.
Rasecke said the FBI stopped by his home this Monday morning to learn more about the man accused of trying to kill a former president.
"His speech towards me was always, um in an arrogant manner. He felt he was above everybody else. He felt entitled," Rasecke said.
The justice department said Ryan Routh was near Donald Trump's golf club and Mar-a-Lago residence on multiple days and times between August 18th and the day of the attempted assassination.
Cellphone records show that Routh had traveled to West Palm Beach from Greensboro in mid-August.
WFMY's Amber Lake spoke with a man who said he owned the home where Routh was staying.
His interactions with him were minor but he said Routh was always very mellow.
