BUTTS COUNTY, Ga. — A Georgia community is mourning the death of a trailblazer.

The Butts County Facebook page shared Sunday, the announcement of the death of Sandra B. Thurston, who the county said was the first woman to become a certified peace officer and law enforcement officer in Butts County.

Thurston died Saturday, Oct. 26, according to the county.

Officials said Thurston served many years with the Jackson Police Department where she rose to the rank of Lieutenant. She went on to serve with the Butts County Sheriff's Office from 1993 until 2011, holding the rank of Major in the administration of Sheriff Gene Pope.

"Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with her sons, Scott and Chris, their families and all who knew and loved this gracious lady," the county said.

People from the community shared their condolences, but also their fond memories of Thurston, like Matt April Vaughn, who wrote:

"In 15 years of law enforcement I have worked for a lot of commanders. Major Thurston by far was one of my favorites. Major Thurston taught me a lot about leadership and also being a good person. She was very kind towards my wife and children we considered her apart of our family. I will always cherish the times we had together and my family will miss her greatly."
