SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — The Republican National Convention is getting security help from roughly 140 law enforcement agencies, according to the Milwaukee Police Department.
One of those teams is coming from Sandy Springs, Georgia.
Sandy Springs Police Sgt. Leon Millholland said that the team has the personnel and capability to help with security in Milwaukee.
"We're well equipped. We're well trained," Sgt. Millholland said. "If we can go up and offer that assistance, we're more than willing to do so."
The department's Quick Response Force (QRF) will be the only team in the state assisting with the RNC this week, according to a list provided by the Milwaukee Police Department.
The Sandy Springs website describes the QRF as a "tier one public order team" that trains for a number of scenarios, including "out-of-control protests, riots, sporting events, or any situation where large crowds have become out-of-control for standard police response."
They regularly train in firearms, door breaching, building clearing and protecting those in need. In 2012, the QRF assisted with security at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.
"They're able to maintain order," Millholland said. "In case instances break out, they can deal with it and assist local agencies that request the help."
The QRF arrived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Saturday -- just hours after the attempted assassination of former president Donald Trump. However, their pre-planned assignment won't change.
"The plan remains the same — to offer assistance in dealing with public order," Millholland said. "Right now, they're getting set up. They're getting briefed on what's going on -- what to expect. And they'll be maintaining that public order and be on call for anything that may come up."
