COVINGTON, Ga. – Newton County school officials refuted rumors of a riot at Alcovy High School the morning after Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election.
According to Newton County School System spokesperson Sherri Davis-Viniard, concerned parents contacted school officials after rumors spread about disorder at Alcovy High Wednesday morning.
“This morning a small group of students were videoed shouting about the election and throwing some items in the commons area,” Davis-Viniard said. “That video was shared on social media with false claims that a riot was taking place at the school.”
11Alive received a message from a viewer who had heard the rumors about the incident at the school. A video shows a couple of students apparently shouting obscenities about the presidential election in a common area, with the caption, “Our youth wants to riot and the current leaders want to cover it up." “Alcovy High School is not on lockdown and was never placed on lockdown. In fact, the school day is running on its normal daily schedule,” Davis-Viniard said. “Had there been an actual emergency situation necessitating a school lockdown that information would be communicated to parents and posted on our website and social media.”
It's not yet known if any students were disciplined.
In another election-related incident at a metro Atlanta school, two students expressing support for Trump at Spalding High School spurred some complaints. Spalding High spokesperson Judy Parker told 11Alive's Chris Hopper that the students came to the school waving Trump flags in the parking lot. Some upset students lodged complaints and the principal told the Trump-supporting students to calm down. The students complied and took their flags down, Parker said.
Trump was elected president Tuesday after a contentious race. Trump, his opponent Hillary Clinton, and current President Barack Obama have all urged Americans to come together after the election.
