Second McEachern High School student arrested after parking lot shooting, police say

The Cobb County School Board is hosting a Town Hall meeting on school safety Thursday evening.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A second person has been arrested in connection to a shooting that left two people injured in the parking lot at McEachern High School Thursday afternoon.

Cobb County Police said that the second suspect is a juvenile and that both suspects are students at the high school.

On Friday, police announced they arrested a 17-year-old in Union City. The teen faces charges including two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm on school property. Authorities said the teen was a witness to the altercation and pulled out a pistol and then shot two people.

The shooting happened just before 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the school along New MacLand Road in Powder Springs.

Cobb County Police Chief Stuart Vanhoozer previously said that the two gunshot victims were not students at the high school. One person was shot in the arm and another person was shot in the leg, authorities said. Both were taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for treatment and were expected to survive.

The incident sparked a large police presence surrounding the school, and the school was placed on a brief Code Red lockdown until law enforcement authorities gave the all-clear.

Investigators have not specified the second suspect's involvement in the shooting. Charges for the suspect have not been released.

Both police and Cobb School Board leaders are emphasizing safety. On Thursday, Cobb School Board Member Leroy Tre’ Hutchins will be hosting a town hall on school safety at the Patricia C. Vaughn Cultural Arts Center. The meeting will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
