(WXIA) -- Officials said eight workers were shocked by a nearby lightning bolt in Powder Springs as severe storms moved through Metro Atlanta Friday afternoon.
The lightning struck nearby, and the people affected felt the jolt as it struck.
Officials said the lightning struck at about 1:58 p.m. The eight people were working on a home at 1524 Silver Mist Circle when it happened. Three people were transported to Kennestone Hospital in Marietta for treatment. Four others refused to be transported and were treated at the scene.
Heavy rain and vivid lightning blasted through the area as the storms moved through. Trees were brought down in the city of Atlanta.
A tornado warning was issued during the 2 pm hour for parts of Cherokee and Cobb counties.
Trees were downed and minor flooding occurred across the area. Up to 40,000 homes and businesses were without power during the height of the storm.
Atlanta Public Schools announced that all after-school activities were canceled for Friday.
Gwinnett County firefighters responded at 3:29 p.m. to a tree down on a car in the 3200 block of River Drive in Lawrenceville, near Five Forks Middle School. The driver was able to exit the vehicle and was uninjured. At 3:35, firefighters responded to a large oak tree that had fallen on a house on Colony Oaks Drive in Snellville. At 3:37, Gwinnett firefighters responded to a lightning strike that caused a fire on the second floor of a home on Dovnick Drive in Lilburn.
Lightning also sparked a house fire in DeKalb County.
Crews continued to clean up downed trees and power lines across the metro area late Friday night.
