CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A sexual assault suspect was shot and killed in return fire Thursday, Clayton County Police said.
On Friday, the individual was identified as 38-year-old Robert Prince.
It happened at a scene along the 5300 block of Riverdale Road near a Valero gas station and Cash Loans building.
Clayton County Police Chief Kevin Roberts said the incident began around 11 a.m. when two officers were investigating the sexual assault, which the chief said happened overnight. At that point while conducting the investigation, parties involved in the overnight incident identified the suspect's car as it was traveling past the scene.
Then officers tried to make contact with the car, stopping in the Valero parking lot and getting out toward the vehicle when the suspect "produced a handgun and began firing upon officers," Roberts said.
A specific number of shots fired in return was not available, but the chief said it was "a large number."
There was no identifying information available about the suspect who was killed other than that he was an adult male.
Roberts said the area is now safe. There was no other information available about the sexual assault incident that was originally being investigated.
