CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. — A Georgia trooper shot and killed a 51-year-old man who is accused of leading authorities on a chase Tuesday evening, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Agents identified the man who died as 51-year-old Jason Scott Fletcher of Heard County. Georgia State Patrol called in the GBI to investigate the shooting that happened the area of Banks Mill Road near Highway 5.
Agents said the Carroll County Sheriff's Office was investigating mail theft complaints near Little New York Road when deputies saw Fletcher driving a car and tried to stop him.
"Fletcher refused to stop, and a chase began," the GBI said in a news release. "The chase continued toward the Roopville area at which time deputies asked the Georgia State Patrol for assistance."
That's when a trooper responded and tried to deploy stop sticks near the intersection of Highway 5 and Banks Circle. The GBI said Fletcher swerved the car and tried to hit the trooper.
"The trooper fired his handgun at Fletcher, hitting Fletcher," The GBI said.
Agents said first aid was given at the scene, and an ambulance took him to the hospital where he died.
The GBI said no law enforcement officers were hurt.
The agency is still investigating. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
