Fulton County deputy shoots stolen car suspect after he pulls out gun following crash, sheriff says

This is a developing story.

ATLANTA — An investigation is underway after a Fulton County Sheriff's Office deputy was involved in a shooting with a 20-year-old suspect driving a stolen car in Atlanta on Tuesday night, the sheriff said.

The shooting happened at the intersection of Harwell Road NW and Delmar Lane NW in Atlanta's Oakcliff neighborhood near I-285.

According to a news release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday, the deputy saw a driver commit a traffic offense on Harwell Road, prompting a traffic stop. The 20-year-old driver then allegedly drove away.

In a Tuesday evening press conference, Fulton County Sheriff Patrick "Pat" Labat said that a deputy noticed a stolen car out of Decatur in the area of Harwell Road and Delmar Lane around 8:15 p.m. When the deputy attempted to pull the suspect over, Labat said the suspect had sped off and that there had been a short chase.

Labat said the suspect then crashed into a telephone pole, and when the driver got out, he allegedly brandished a weapon at the deputy. The deputy then fired and hit the 20-year-old at least one time as he was running behind a house. The GBI stated that after the suspect ran, deputies searched for him in the backyard of a home on an adjacent street.

GBI agents added that a firearm was located near the shooting, where deputies took the suspect into custody.  He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The deputy was uninjured in the incident.

The GBI is now investigating.
