Suspect killed by officers after attempting to evade police during traffic stop identified: Cobb PD

This is a developing story.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A suspect was shot and killed by police in Cobb County on Friday afternoon after police said the driver of a truck tried to evade officers during a traffic stop.

A massive police presence was seen at a Chevron gas station in the area of Old Floyd Road and Fontaine Road in Mableton. The gas station is not far from Veterans Memorial Highway.

In a Friday afternoon press conference, police said they were alerted to a vehicle with a stolen license plate around 2:40 p.m. When officers tried to pull over the driver in the parking lot of the gas station, the suspect tried to drive away from the officers, according to Cobb Police.

The driver of the truck struck a pedestrian's car and several Cobb County Police cars. During the incident, several officers fired at the truck, and the driver was hit by gunfire. The suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Clifford Jacoby Beck, was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No officers were injured, police said.

The collision between the truck and police cars caused the truck to ignite in flames. Police said the blaze was put out quickly.

11Alive's SkyTracker flew over the scene, which showed a box truck burnt out and several law enforcement vehicles that appeared to have crashed into the truck in the parking lot of the gas station. One law enforcement car had its back window shattered out.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now investigating the shooting.
