First segment of Silver Comet Connector breaks ground in Atlanta

The trail is expected to open in 2025.

ATLANTA — Editor's note: The above video is from previous coverage.

After years of planning, construction is now underway on the Woodall Rail Trail, the first segment of the Silver Comet Connector, on Atlanta's upper westside.

The trail, which will connect to the nearly 100-mile-long Siver Comet Trail, will provide a safe place for walkers and bikers while preserving the green space in the area.

Volunteer groups worked through the last two years to remove invasive plants from the 10-acre tract, continuing to replant native grasses, shrubs, and trees along the trail during and after construction.

The Atlanta segment of the trail will follow along previously neglected Woodall Creek, beginning at Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard and Elaine Avenue and extending north to the intersection of Chattahoochee Avenue and Chattahoochee Row.

“The Woodall Rail Trail is a testament to the commitment of our Upper Westside community, our project partners, and the enduring spirit of collaboration,” said Elizabeth Hollister, the executive director of Upper Westside Community Improvement District. “It symbolizes the shared dedication to creating a healthier, more sustainable and interconnected Atlanta.”

The Silver Comet Connector is expected to open in the first quarter of 2025.
