Small Business Saturday gives locals a chance to cash in on holiday shopping fever

Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday are all expected to set records this year.

ATLANTA — While the turkey and dressing has probably worn off for many Americans, their appetite for shopping hasn't.

Black Friday sales were up for the year - marking a win for big box retailers. So, Small Business Saturday served as a chance for little shops to get in on the action.

"It was a big rush this morning," Kiyomi Rollins, owner of The Good Hair Shop, said. "I was just, 'OK, you bought the TV yesterday and now you're shopping small today.' I can deal with it. I can deal with it."

The day started early for Rollins. Even though her shop was closed on Black Friday, online sales forced her and her husband to clear the shelves in their Southwest Atlanta store before the small business holiday began.

"It was definitely pulling all of the inventory that was for the online orders," she said.

Rollins' shop isn't the only place benefiting from Small Business Saturday. According to Adobe Analytics numbers, online sales for small businesses reached $400 million by 10 a.m. Adobe predicts Small Business Saturday will pull in a record $3 billion in online sales alone.

This comes after Black Friday deals brought in more than $6 billion in online sales - up more than 23 percent from 2017 - a new high.

For the local, independent retailers and restaurants taking part in Small Business Saturday, they hope hanging the blue and white "Shop Small" signs in the windows will bring in foot traffic as well.

Over in downtown Roswell, Perry and Sandra Pettett, owners of Crazy Love Coffee House, were prepared for a big day.

"Well, it is very important because this particular district is really highlighted by communities and small businesses and it really makes the character of the area," Perry said.

It's a sentiment Rollins shares.

"We have hte opportunity or the benefit of actually having a business in a neighborhood," she said. "We are a neighborhood business."
