COBB COUNTY, Ga. – The woman shot in the parking lot of Cumberland Mall has died of her injuries, and the man suspected of killing her has committed suicide.
The body of 59-year-old Danny Wray Brown was found inside an East Point home. Cobb County Police Sgt. Dana Pierce said Brown died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
He was accused of shooting 55-year-old Violet Lambert outside the Cumberland Mall Macy's Monday afternoon. Police said a van driven by the suspect was tracked to the house when Brown's body was found.
Police said they received several 911 calls at about 2:20 p.m., saying that a woman had been shot near the Macy's main entrance on the west side of the mall.
Pierce said when officers arrived, they found Lambert on the ground in the parking lot. She was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Witnesses told investigators that they heard an argument between the woman and a man in the parking lot. Officers said the man shot the woman over the course of the altercation.
A bystander tried to help the woman, but was fired upon by the suspect, Pierce said. That bystander was not injured.
Authorities believe Lambert and Brown knew each other.
Investigators said the shooter calmly got into the passenger side of a white van with a ladder rack on the top, and a long, white pipe attached to the rack. The van then drove away.
11Alive's Paul Crawley said there is an area in front of the Macy's store that was cordoned off by police. Several shoppers were stranded, as their vehicles were within the cordoned-off investigation area.
