Truck hits Covered Bridge warning bars just after installation

The hanging bars are supposed to help prevent vehicles taller than 7-feet from damaging Cobb County's historic Covered Bridge

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Just hours after they were installed, the hanging pipes used prevent tall vehicles from hitting Cobb County's historic Covered Bridge, were struck by a truck, officials said.

Cobb County Communications Director Ross Cavitt told 11Alive on Friday afternoon, "the pipes did their job."

He said that shortly after the pipes were put up Thursday, a truck sailed through the warning zone on the Smyrna side of the bridge on Concord Road at what Cavitt called a high rate of speed.

Cavitt said the truck was able to slow down enough to turn around before it reached the Covered Bridge itself.

He said there was minor damage to one of the pipes, which was quickly repaired.

The hanging pipes are on approaches to both sides to the historic Covered Bridge, which, according to Cavitt, has had more than 20 vehicles strike either the bridge or the surrounding steel structure, over the past year.
