15-year-old student hit by car while walking to school: Cobb Police

The 15-year-old was seriously injured in the crash, police say.

AUSTELL, Ga. — A South Cobb High School student has been hospitalized after being hit by a car while walking to school Wednesday morning, police say.  

According to investigators, around 8:42 a.m., a gray 2021 Kia Rio driven by a 22-year-old man was traveling east on Clay Road and passed through the intersection while the light was green. When he reached the eastern side of Clay Road, the vehicle struck a 15-year-old boy who had stepped into the roadway.

The student was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries. Police have not released the student's identity. 

The Cobb County School District has released a statement about the student injured in the crash. 

"This morning, a student was hit by a vehicle after stepping in the road on the way to school. We appreciate the quick response of Cobb County Police. Our thoughts are with the student," a district spokesperson said. 

The Cobb County Police Department's Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is investigating the incident. Anyone with information relevant to the investigation is advised to contact the STEP Unit at 770-499-3987.

It's unclear at this time if the driver will be charged.
