South DeKalb residents welcome Marta transit hub plan, say it's needed

Hub will feature park-and-ride, restrooms and access to four bus routes.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — MARTA riders in South Dekalb County will have easier access to public transportation when a new transit hub opens along Candler Road.

On Tuesday, MARTA announced its receiving a $25 million federal grant to help fund the $37.5 million project.

The new South Dekalb Transit Hub will be built in one of MARTA’s high ridership areas near Candler Road and Rainbow Drive, according to county officials.

“I grew up with the slogan 'MARTA is smarter.' They had that slogan years ago. I used to ride MARTA to school, it was 15 cents," said longtime Dekalb resident, Alonia Parker.

Parker said she’s seen the growing population impact drive times and thinks the hub will help people looking to avoid traffic jams.

“MARTA is very convenient especially now with the traffic being the way it is. Its really difficult and frustrating to drive anywhere sometimes," said Parker.

The 2,500-square-foot hub will be built near The Gallery at South Dekalb Mall with park and ride and bathrooms.

Resident and frequent rider Joseph said the hub makes sense.

“I think it’s a great idea to put something in the community especially in this area. It’s a lot easier to come here than to go the station in downtown Decatur. I think its going to be a very good idea," said Joseph.

The new transit hub will serve four frequently used bus routes – including routes  9, 15, 74 and 186.

The center is slated to open in 2026.
