SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — Three children and a woman are in the hospital after a fire broke out at a Griffin home on Thursday, according to the Spalding County Fire Department.
It happened at a home located at 4241 Old Atlanta Road. Firefighters responded after the fire department received a report from a concerned bystander regarding a fire at the home just around 11 a.m. When they arrived, they found flames and smoke coming from the residence.
Witnesses on scene said two people were able to save three children from the home, and a firefighter saved the woman when they arrived. Spalding County Fire Marshal Rocky White said the woman in the home helped one of the children out of the home and neighbors helped the other two children get out of the burning house.
"It became evident when I began interviewing them that this is a tightly knit community, and they saw that something was wrong, and they immediately, without question, sprang into action to help their neighbors in their most desperate time of need," White said.
Unfortunately, several pets died in the fire, according to White.
The three children were airlifted to Grady Hospital, and the woman was taken to Spalding Wellstar, according to the fire department.
It is unclear if the woman and children are related to each other and the condition of each of the four victims at this time.
Officials added that the state fire marshal would investigate what caused the fire, according to a news release.
