HAMPTON, Ga. -- Two students were taken into custody after bringing a weapon to Lovejoy High School in Clayton County Wednesday.
Clayton County Schools spokeswoman Vicki Gavalas said school administrators found the unloaded .22 automatic handgun in a student's locker.
A staff member overheard two students talking about a gun, prompting the search. Gavalas said the students admitted to hiding the gun.
School staff members believe the student who brought the gun to school stashed the weapon outside the building and went through the standard morning metal detector search. Later, he retrieved the gun and moved it to his locker, according to Gavalas.
The school was on lockdown for 20 minutes. Gavalas said students were never in any danger.
Wednesday's incident is the second time a metro Atlanta student brought a weapon to school this week. On Tuesday, two students tried to hide an Airsoft gun in a bathroom ceiling at Yeager Middle School in Douglas County.
