Student charged after allegedly bringing loaded gun to high school football game in Commerce: police

COMMERCE, Ga. — A student was detained and charged after police officers found him carrying a loaded handgun at a high school football game in Commerce Friday night.

Police said they received a tip from another student who suspected the student appeared to be armed with a weapon.

When officers approached the student, he was detained and searched. Police said they found a loaded .45 caliber pistol he had concealed on him. He was charged through the juvenile court system and remains detained, according to Commerce Police Department.

Police did not give the age of the student or at which high school football game the incident occurred in the Commerce city limits. Commerce is roughly 30 minutes northwest of Athens.

Police also said they are investigating how the student got in possession of the gun.
