DECATUR, Ga. — A fight after a Dekalb County high school basketball game was broken up when school district police pepper-sprayed those involved, according to a letter sent home by the Redan High School principal.
Principal Vitella Dodson said the fight occurred after an away basketball game against Towers High School. The letter said the DeKalb County School District Police took measures to control the situation, including discharging pepper spray.
Emergency medical personnel treated the individuals who were impacted. No serious injuries were reported.
"I commend the prompt and professional response of law enforcement, security personnel, school administrators, staff, and others involved in addressing this incident quickly and safely," Principal Dodson wrote. "Situations like these negatively impact our schools' safety and reputation. We ask that our families and community partners help us address these disciplinary issues and the consequences of these behaviors by talking to your children or other young people you know."
Although there is currently limited information about what led up to the fight, the school district said all students who were involved will be held fully accountable under the law, adding Wednesday that "all DCSD students participating in this incident face disciplinary consequences as outlined in the District's 2023-2024 Code of Student Conduct."
Police are still investigating.
