More than 150 volunteers from Target and AT&T worked together to build an outdoor learning lab at Acworth Elementary School in Cobb County.
The "Big Dig" was hosted by Out Teach, a national nonprofit that helps teachers unlock student peformance with outdoor experiential learning.
AT&T and Target provided volunteers and funding to pay for the cost of materials, professional contract labor, and Out Teach staffers who will continue to work with students and teachers.
Before construction began, students mapped out the different features they wanted in their outdoor learning lab.
Parents, teachers and administrators also gave their input.
The space includes seating areas, white boards, raised vegetable and flower beds, a weather station, earth science stations, rain barrels, animal and insect habitats and more.
Out Teach will provide years of training and professional development and coaching to show teachers how to use each different feature to improve instruction and deepen student understanding.
