Caramel, pecan, and croissant - How do you say them? Survey breakdown

When it comes to the word caramel, 64% of those surveyed pronounce the word CARE-a-mel, while 36% of people say Car-muhl.

This weekend, while spending time with friends and family, you might come across some words that, depending on where you are from or just how you prefer to say it, may cause a stir at the dinner table.

A survey conducted by Preply shows some popular pronunciations of words and how those who were surveyed say them. Take our quiz and see how you match up against Preply.

Caramel 

When it comes to the word caramel, 64% of those surveyed pronounce the word CARE-a-mel, while 36% of people say Car-muhl.

Pecan

How about the ever-so-famous pecan pronunciation debate? According to the survey, 37% of people say PEA-can, 33% of people say PEA-kahn, while just 29% of those surveyed say puh-KAHN.

Croissant

There’s also pronunciation debate over the golden flakey treat served up with butter, jam or even chocolate. According to the survey, 77% of people say kruh-SAHNT, 16% of people say kwah-SAHNT while just 7% of people surveyed say KWAH-son.

The survey also explored those preferred terms of certain delicacies and traditions that we’ve all come to love in a portion of the survey Preply calls “This or That.”  Those surveyed said they were more likely to use the term:

  • Cinnamon roll (96%) over stick bun (4%)
  • Soda (57%) was the overall leader when pitted against the term coke (26%) and pop (17%)
  • Dinner (83%) triumphed over the term supper (17%
  • Eggnog (95%) vs its other term, not known to most, boiled custard (5%)
