Suspect arrested, elderly man seriously injured in hit and run in Cherokee County, deputies say

The 78-year-old victim suffered from life-threatening injuries, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities are investigating after an alleged hit and run over the weekend left an elderly man fighting for his life.

According to a release from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a hit-and-run involving a bicyclist on Towne Lake Parkway at Wyngate Parkway on Mar. 3.

Witnesses told authorities they saw a silver/gray Nissan car traveling west on Towne Lake Parkway cross the intersection, drive onto the sidewalk, hit a male bicyclist and continue toward Bells Ferry Road.

Once on the scene, deputies found the bicyclist, a 78-year-old man from Woodstock, unresponsive but breathing. He was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where he remains with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators were able to locate the vehicle with front-end damage on Yachting Way, along with the possible suspect. The man was arrested and charged in connection to the crash, but the charges were later dropped due to investigators obtaining new evidence in the case, leading them to a new suspect.

Investigators say they have located a second vehicle they believe struck the cyclist, and that the investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed at this time.

The victim's identity will not be released at this time, police say.
