ATLANTA — A SWAT standoff at an Atlanta home has come to an end at an Atlanta home Sunday after the suspect was taken into custody, police said.
Atlanta Police were at the scene of a SWAT situation at 1748 South Olympian Way. This news first came in shortly after 9:30 a.m.
Police had previously said there had been no injuries. They added that the incident began as a dispute involving a weapon and shots fired.
A woman, who wished to not be identified, told 11Alive she lived at a home along South Olympian Way in southwest Atlanta with her sister, mother, her son and grandkids. She said she called Atlanta Police on Saturday regarding an incident the day before the standoff, reporting that her sister had used a gun.
“I explained to them that we heard gunshots on the premises in the home. So they stepped into the home and I walked them to the kitchen and the gun is still on the premises," she said.
Atlanta Police returned after 9:30 a.m. and the situation escalated into a SWAT standoff.
Neighbor Mary was wondering if there was more gunfire.
"My sister said she heard 40 shots up there," Mary said.
Police have not confirmed if any shots were fired by them or the suspect. 11Alive's field crew did hear bangs and crashes after the SWAT Team started moving.
Neighbor Eric Faison watched the events play out.
"Police coming up the street," Faison said, "I want everybody to be professional. She's going through a condition."
Neighbor Cynthia Stewart was surprised when she saw the damage to the home.
"If you go by her house, her house is shot the heck up," Stewart said.
Mary didn't understand why there was such a large police presence.
"It didn't make any sense," Mary said, "There wasn't but one person in that house. Why did they have to take SWATs and these tankers out here and AK-47s to go up there and shoot that lady's house up?"
The family of the suspect tells 11Alive that she struggled with mental health issues.
"It's one, poor, mentally-ill Black woman who was probably in need of medication, had a breakdown," Stewart said.
The community is rooting for the suspect to get the help she needs so that this amount of law enforcement doesn't show up in their neighborhood again.
"Everybody's going through something," Faison said, "We never know when we're going to go through something until it happens it happens to you or your family member."

Officers previously noted that the suspect was still believed to be inside the home, while an adult and two children walked out.
Because of the situation, MARTA announced it temporarily re-routed Route 68 in the area.
