'The First 48' on A&E hopes to crack Atlanta double homicide case

Crime Stoppers Atlanta offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for the murders.

An unsolved double homicide, long grown cold, is the subject of a cable series on true crime. For the families of those murdered, it's an opportunity to generate new clues.

On October 15, 2014, Derrick McGinty and Michael Edwards were shot and killed in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Memorial Drive.

2014 ARCHIVE ' APD search for answers in double homicide

A month after the murders, Atlanta Police canvassed the area again, looking for any possible witnesses. At the time, homicide Lt. Charles Hampton said they had one tip that could explain why it happened: "We understand it may have been some type of an argument that led up to the shooting but again we just haven't been able to confirm that for sure," he said.

Derrick McGinty was a father of six. His mother, Catherine Collins said the wait for answers has gotten more and more difficult. "We just need closure. They took a big part out of my heart. I just don't know," she said.

Michael Edwards left behind two sons, ages five and six. His mother also wants justice. "You're used to having certain ones there, him, his love, his spirit and it's just awful," Veronica Edwards said.

The show, The First 48 on cable network A&E, will feature the double homicide on its July 28th episode. The McGinty and Edwards families hope the show will generate new leads in the case.
