SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Roughly 30 people were displaced from their homes Wednesday morning when a fire broke out at a Sandy Springs apartment complex.
It happened at The Overlook apartments on Colquitt Road. One person was taken to Grady Hospital with minor burn injuries and smoke inhalation.
11Alive's Liza Lucas was on scene early Wednesday, where fire officials pointed to a top-floor area where the fire is believed to have originated. Officials said the fire itself was quickly contained after crews rushed to the scene, but there was extensive smoke damage in the building.
One resident, Margaret Reeves, told 11Alive she woke up and evacuated her apartment when her smoke detector started going off.
"I grabbed my backpack... as well as my wallet and keys, opened the door and just started yelling for somebody to help me get down the stairs," she said.
Reeves added she'd spoken to other neighbors on scene.
Sandy Springs Section Fire Chief Patrick Flaherty told 11Alive's Karys Belger one person was transported to the hospital for burns and is in serious condition.
The Red Cross is currently assisting 15 people with housing and other needs.
