ATLANTA -- Three Atlanta streets that have the word "Confederate" in their names could be changed.
This effort started nearly a year ago, when council members came up with a committee to review all city streets names and monuments.
A committee was formed in 2017 after the tragic events in Charlottesville, Virginia in which a man allegedly slammed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing one of them, during a white nationalist rally. The rally and violence renewed the debate over Confederate monuments across the nation.
Here in Atlanta, the ordinance by Council Member Carla Smith said she received a petition that shows residents were in support of renaming Confederate Avenue SE, East Confederate Avenue SE, and Confederate Court SE.
Many homeowners were in favor because several of them affected have duplicated address. Renaming the streets would provide an opportunity to correct the issue.
The new proposed names have not been selected.
