ATLANTA — A Thomaston, Ga. police officer is behind bars for making false statements and violating his oath, according to officials at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The GBI says Ulysses Clark, a 20-year veteran with the Thomaston Police Department, was under investigation for allegedly signing a certificate of inspection for a trailer that he did not physically examine. The GBI says Clark was on duty when he signed the inspection.
According to investigators, the trailer – worth between $10,000 and $20,000 – had previously been reported stolen in another jurisdiction and entered into both Georgia's and the National Crime Information Centers prior to the trailer being presented for inspection.
Subsequently, Clark allegedly made false statements to the local agency investigating the theft of the stolen trailer, saying he had inspected the trailer and searched the crime information centers before signing the certificate.
Clark was arrested and charged Monday afternoon. The GBI is continuing its investigation.
