GEORGIA, USA — Eighteen people are now dead in separate traffic incidents, and two people drowned in Georgia during the Fourth of July holiday period, according to the Department of Public Safety and Department of Natural Resources.
According to the Georgia State Patrol and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division, the holiday travel period is 102 hours long, beginning on Wednesday, July 3, at 6 p.m. and ending on Sunday, July 7, at 11:59 p.m. For the Georgia Department of Natural Resouces, the holiday boating period was from Thursday, July 4, starting at 12:01 a.m. through Sunday, July 7, ending at 11:59 p.m.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources also released its numbers for boating and waterway incidents during the holiday period. Two people drowned over the holiday weekend, including a teen who drowned on Tybee Island.
According to a GoFundMe fundraiser, Laquvis McCray from Atlanta was on a trip to Savannah with friends to visit their family when he was pulled under the water with two others.
A 39-year-old man also drowned at Lake Rabun. The man was reported missing just a day before his body was found in the lake, according to the DNR.
The DNR added that 32 people were also arrested for boating under the influence.
According to the DNR, last Fourth of July, no one drowned, and 34 people were arrested for boating under the influence.
