Douglas County residents to vote on 1% sales tax for transportation projects on November ballot

The tax, also known as the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or T-SPLOST would cover projects over six years if voters approve.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — Douglas County residents can vote on a local option sales tax that will support roadway projects on the November ballot.

If voters approve, the tax, also known as the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or T-SPLOST, would cover projects over six years.

What does this mean?

Any time you buy something from a retail store with sales tax, the county will authorize a tax to fund a portion of the project.

According to county officials, the proposed T-SPLOST will supplement the existing transportation funding through an additional 1% sales tax.

Officials added that this would generate over $100 million in revenue over the next six years, from 2025 to 2031.

A news release stated that the county's Department of Transportation will use the revenue to improve the county's roads with maintenance and new projects.

The projects will focus on "safety, congestion relief, enhanced mobility, and quality of life for all citizens."

According to the county, the transportation department maintains over 700 miles of roadways each year.

"With a growing population and increasing visitor and pass-through traffic, the county’s infrastructure is feeling the strain," a county news release added.

How to learn more

County officials are allowing residents to learn more about the T-SPLOST and provide input on the potential list of projects.

Residents will be allowed to participate in a series of public engagement meetings throughout the county.

The first meeting will be on Wednesday, July 17, at 6:30 p.m. in Citizen's Hall at the Douglas County Courthouse.

For those who would like additional information, they can contact the county's Constituent Services Department at constituentservices@douglascountyga.gov.
